Native American Athletes Awarded $5,000 Scholarships
at “Native American All-Star Basketball Classic”
March 14, 2008
Tulsa, OK -- Two Native American high school senior athletes won $5,000 scholarships at the premier “Native American All-Star Basketball Amber Karty Scholarship Winner Classic” on March 14, 2008. Amber Karty, Comanche/Kiowa from Elgin High School and Garret Bishop, Choctaw from Kingston High School were the award recipients. The exhibition games were played prior to the Tulsa 66ers pro game at Expo Pavilion, Tulsa , OK . The students were chosen based on all around academic achievement, community and tribal involvement, ACT scores and school transcripts, recommendations from their local coaches, and being a member in good standing on their high school basketball team.

Garrett Bishop Scholarship WinnerThe games were co-hosted by the Tulsa 66ers and the Minority Humanitarian Foundation, Inc, and will be an annual event. NIKE provided the uniforms for the student athletes. The scholarships were presented at half-time of the 66ers game.

MVP’s for the games were Amber Karty and Garrett Bishop. Coaches included Christie Jennings, Choctaw, from Stonewall High School – White and Blue Team; Laura Gragg, Cherokee, from Quinton High School - Gold & Black Team; Michael Clay, Choctaw, from Rattan High School - Red Team; and Mark Hudson, Creek, from Preston High School - Black & Gold Team. Announcer was George Tiger (Muscogee Creek); scorekeeper was Cyndi Houser (Choctaw), clock keeper was Don Osborne (Cherokee); photographer was Sue Folsom (Choctaw). Stats are as follows:

Girls score: 93-56 Gold Team defeated White and Blue Team

Leading scorers:

Gold Team: Amber Karty (Elgin) 15 pts., Andrea Nichols (Verdigris) 12 pts., Ashley Cox (Pryor) 11 pts., Hannah Frailey (Chouteau) 11 pts.

White Team: Ashley McKeel (Smithville) 11 pts., Mallory Walker (Coalgate) 10 pts.

Boys score: 85-64 Red Team defeated Black & Gold Team

Red Team: Garrett Bishop (Kingston) 17 pts., Bronson Gore (Stonewall), 13 pts., Quinton Picone (Panola) 12 pts., Glen Davidson (Rattan) 12 pts.

Black & Gold Team: Zach Rogers (Vian) 13 pts., Jordan Coffman (Haworth) 15 pts., Ryan Hudson (Preston) 9 pts.
